"When I was eight, I went through two very profound experiences. The first was during a beach vacation where I witnessed a baby shark being washed up on shore. After the small shark had stopped moving I pushed my way through a crowd trying with a stick to move it back into the ocean. With many unsuccessful attempts, I walked away only to look back & watch it be consumed by several small waves. I was hooked on learning all I could about sharks, and quickly started to draw them. Through my drawings, I learned that the shark is a flawless machine which often represents fear, power and mystery. I was also impressed by the shape of the shark's body, the contrast of their sleek dark colors, and their sharp dorsal fins (represented as "roofs" in my depiction of houses).
That same summer our house was flooded due to a heavy rainstorm. Watching toys and furniture float in the basement left a fractural impression on just how valuable my childhood
shelter and playroom were."
